I'm trying to establish a relationship between urban development dynamics and retail location.
There is an evidence that food distribution is moving from a suburbanization phase (with hypermarkets and big supermarkets) towards a period of small supermarkets, that is probably related to a change in urban development dynamics to the center of the metropolitan area (we conducted a Kernel Density - Point Density and we found an evidence that small supermarkets are more concentrated in central areas).
Now, we need to access the relation between population distribution and retail store locations (of different types).
So, at the moment we have:
1. Population number by parish (1950-2011) and we identified the different urban dynamics.
2. Retail location (hypermarkets, big supermarkets and small supermarkets).
Basically we want to test (i) if hypermarket and big supermarkets location is related/correlated with suburbanization phase. Comparing both maps separately, it seems so. There are no hypermarkets and big supermarkets at the central areas and (ii) if small supermarkets are related with a change in urban development with the decline of peripherical growth and the regeneration of urban center.
In terms of time, big supermarkets are not being opened as fast as before and hypermarkets are not being opened. However, in the last period (2001-11), where we've identified a reurbanization trend, small supermarkets growth a lot between 2011 and 2018 (retail is reactive).
How can I establish this relation?
