I have a WestJet Flight LGW-YYC that I booked using kiwi.com. WestJet offers free seat selection with the online check-in on their homepage (see their FAQ at "
Can I still select my seat if I don't want to pay the fee?").
With the automatic online check-in that kiwi.com provides by default, I can not select the seat for free during check-in, instead I have to pay a 30€ fee.
Can I avoid the automatic check-in by kiwi.com, do the check-in manually by myself on the WestJet homepage, and in this way select my seat for free?

Yes, this is possible. I found it wasn't covered by the kiwi.com FAQ so I called kiwi.com customer service, and after some confusion and explaining they disabled the automatic check-in for my flight.

@RoddyoftheFrozenPeas I searched the kiwi.com website extensively for this option, but didn't find it. Also the lady I talked to was quite surprised by my request at first and had to ask her superior for help, so I guess you have to directly contact them at the moment. But as after the talk to her boss she explicitely thanked me for pointing out this issue they didn't know about, it might be something they'll implement in the future.

Once you identify the specific flight, you can always go to another site, including the airline itself, to book the flight. And of course you can check in with the airline directly as well. I have booked many flights with Kiwi, but I have always checked in on the airline’s website or at the airport.
I have only once paid for a seat assignment, and that wasn’t with Kiwi.
Sometimes, I’ve found Kayak slightly cheaper than Kiwi, and sometimes the airline itself. And more than once, Kiwi has claimed that my charge was declined and asked me to send them images of passport and driver’s license. Big NO on that one! (In each case, I booked with the same card via someone else.).

@WGroleau Can you check your kiwi.com e-tickets in question for something like "Kiwi.com will complete the online check-in for this flight and send your boarding pass in a separate email."? (This is what it says on my ticket pdf.) It seems they do the automatic check-in not for all flights, but if yours was supposed to be checked automatically but you still did it manually and it worked, this would invalidate my whole question.

I don't think I have ever gotten a ticket from them. I have probably deleted most of their e-mails, but I looked at the last one. It says nothing about check-in, but it does say "e-ticket attached." However, NOTHING was attached. There was a button that said "download your PDF ticket" but what it pulled from the web was NOT a ticket.
